A cramp also called ‘Charley Horse’, is a feeling of sudden pain. However, it happens mostly in the legs, following any activity, or even during sleep.

Cramps are experienced in the lower limbs, especially in the calf (Gastrocnemius & Soleus Muscles). As well as, in the thigh (Hamstrings, Quadriceps Femoris and Glutei Muscles).

Causes Of Cramps

Cramps occur when there is a reduction in blood supply to the muscle (Transient: Ischemia / Prolonged: Infarction).

The nutrient and oxygen supply required by the muscle is not sufficient, whenever there is a reduction in blood supply. Also, there is a failure in the relaxation of muscles, resulting in pain and cramp.

  • Reduced/Poor blood supply to the muscle
  • Dehydration
  • Insufficient warm-up prior to strenuous exercise
  • Overexertion of muscles
  • Exercising in a hot climate

  • Muscle fatigue
  • Mineral deficiency (Potassium, Sodium, Calcium etc)
  • Vitamin deficiency
  • Peripheral vascular diseases

Menstrual Cramp: A menstrual cramp is different from the kind of cramp discussed in this article. A menstrual cramp is caused due to uterine contractions and is physiologic (normal).

  • Quinoa
  • Cacao
  • Pumpkin
  • Leafy greens
  • Avocado
  • Yogurt

However, there is much reason that can lead to cramps which have serious pathologies, such as Peripheral Vascular Diseases (Raynaud’s Disease, Buerger Disease).

Therefore, in case of repeated cramps, visit a doctor.  Also, take up necessary investigations.
